Her Honor Mentoring was developed by Nicole Sheindlin and Judith Sheindlin, as an innovative way to boost self confidence in young women at the workplace and everyday life.
In 1978, Judith Sheindlin married Gerald Sheindlin and the two created a blended family of five children (Greg, Jamie, Jon, Adam and Nicole). One of the family values that Judith instilled was that women should make career a priority. Nicole followed this advice and after college earned a Juris Doctorate degree from New York Law School (Judith's alma mater). During law school Nicole spent many hours in the Manhattan Family Court observing Judith Sheindlin as the Administrative Judge. It was this combination of law school and observation of Judith in action that was Nicole's catalyst for the structure of Her Honor Mentoring. The Sheindlin women were looking to create a program that supported students who remained dedicated to education and community, despite personal adversity.
In 2006, Nicole Sheindlin founded Her Honor Mentoring with the backing of her stepmother, Judith Sheindlin. The two partnered with the Westchester County Office for Women and the Women's Research and Education Fund to administer the program. Nicole and Judith chose Mamaroneck High School as the pilot school for Her Honor Mentoring. In 2007, the first class of mentees consisted of eight high school seniors and local professional women who readily volunteered to be mentors. Capitalizing on the success of year one, Her Honor Mentoring forged a partnership with Patricia Lanza of the Lanza Family Foundation and eagerly added Mount Vernon High School to their roster. The 2008 class consisted of eighteen mentees, all of whom successfully completed the program and continued on to college.
Her Honor Mentoring continues to expand with support from Judith Sheindlin, Patricia Lanza and new interest from local corporations. In 2009, White Plains High School was selected to participate in the program and this years' class currently consists of thirty mentees and mentors. In the future, Her Honor Mentoring hopes to offer their program to additional high schools throughout Westchester County.
